Nimrod flights delayed for safety checks
The resumption of Nimrod flights from RAF Kinloss has been put back after one flight was delayed over a "minor technical issue".
The Nimrod flight, which was due to take off from the base in Scotland on Tuesday morning, was delayed for safety checks. It was due to take off at noon.
A Nimrod MR2 crashed in Afghanistan at the weekend, killing 14 military personnel, twelve of whom were staff based at RAF Kinloss.
However, a spokesperson for the Ministry of Defence said that the technical issue discovered on Tuesday was not related to the crash.
The base has been in mourning since the crash and all non-essential flights from the base were grounded on Monday as a mark of respect for the victims. A service was also held at the base, where prayers were said and a minute's silence observed.
A four-man board of inquiry is investigating the cause of the crash, which is currently believed to be a technical fault.
Chief of the Defence Staff Air Chief Marshall Sir Glenn Torpy said: "We have definitely got an early report that the pilot reported a technical problem connected with fire.
"The whole recovery operation for the wreckage is ongoing at the moment and I cannot confirm at the moment whether they actually have identified the black box."
