Peugeot factory confirms closure date

The Peugeot car plant in Ryton, near Coventry, is to close in January, it has been announced.

Peugeot-Citroen had previously announced that production at the Warwickshire plant would cease in the middle of 2007, with the loss of 2,300 jobs.

In a statement, the company said that almost a quarter of the workforce had asked to leave recently. The statement also said that the company had a £5 million centre which was dedicated to helping Ryton staff with more than 6,000 pre-qualified job opportunities available.

However, the Transport and General Workers Union has accused Peugeot Citroen of "callous cynicism". Dave Osborne, T&G national secretary said: "Peugeot built up hopes that there would be work well into next year if people wanted it. But they have dashed those hopes and, worse, denied our members the chance to look for work in the knowledge there was a reasonable income coming in.

"It is not the sort of pre-Christmas present anybody wants especially as the workforce has been loyal over many years. They deserve better."
