Unemployment continues to rise in UK

Unemployment is continuing to rise in the UK, according to the latest figures.

The Office for National Statistics figures showed that the number of people who were unemployed rose to 1.7 million in the three months to August – the highest level for six years.

The increase took the unemployment rate to 5.5%, an increase of 0.1% on the previous quarter's figures.

The number of people claiming Jobseekers Allowance also rose to 962,000 in September – an increase of 10,200.

Earnings growth, including bonuses, in the year to August also fell to 4.2%, a decrease of 0.2 points from July. Excluding bonuses, it was 3.6%, a decrease of 0.1 points from last month.

Unemployment Levels Reach 12-Year High
Unemployment levels in the UK have risen by 232,000 to 2.26 million in the three months to April - the highest level in more than 12 years. The Office for National Statistics (ONS) also said the number of people claiming jobseeker's allowance increased by 39,300 in May to 1.

Unemployment Figures On The Rise
Unemployment in the UK increased by 12,000 to 1.62 million in the three months to May, the latest figures have revealed. The Office of National Statistics reported that the number of people in the UK claiming Jobseeker's Allowance rose by 15,500 to reach 840,100 in June. This was the largest monthly increase since December 1992.

Official figures show big rise in employment rate
Employment levels are up, and the number of people claiming out-of-work benefits is down, according to official figures out today. The number of people in work in the UK was 28.3 million in the three months to July 2004, up 179,000 in a year. Official unemployment figures show a fall of 87,000 to 1.41 million over the same period.

UK Unemployment Rises
There has been an unexpected rise in the number of unemployed people in Britain, the latest figures have revealed. The number of people without a job rose by 38,000 in the three months to June to reach 2.49 million, the Office of National Statistics confirmed. Britain's unemployment rate has now risen to 7.9%.

UK unemployment figures on the rise
The number of unemployed people in the UK has risen, although the unemployment rate has remained unchanged, the latest figures reveal. The number of people out of work increased by 12,000 to 1.42 million from the previous quarter, the Office of National Statistics reported. However, the unemployment rate remained static at 4.7%.
