Blair warns of 'catastrophic' global warming

Prime Minister Tony Blair has issued a stark warning that the world is close to a “catastrophic tipping point” on global warning.

This news comes on the day Mr Blair will attend an EU Summit in Lahti, Finland to advise fellow European leaders on the serious consequences of the situation regarding the economy, supply of resources and peoples safety.

A joint Anglo-Dutch letter to the other leaders was issued, highlighting the importance of formulating a low carbon economy as well as other energy sources.

“We have a window of only 10 to 15 years to take the steps we need to avoid crossing catastrophic tipping points,” the letter advises.

“These would have serious consequences for our economic growth prospects, the safety of our people and the supply of resources, most notably energy.”

Russian President Vladimir Putin will be among the leaders at the meeting.

It is thought that Mr Putin will attempt to exploit EU divisions over attitudes to Russia, and the summit will help to negotiate improved deals for oil and gas companies in Russia.

However, with rising energy prices and high demand for gas President Putin does not need to negotiate, and in return, he wants trade breaks from Europe.

Other topics that will be addressed during the meeting will be the increasing bloodshed in the Sudanese region of Dufur.
