Murder inquiry launched after family die in fire

A house fire in Lancashire in which a mother and her four daughters died was started deliberately, police have revealed.

The bodies of Canaze Riaz, 39, and her daughters - Sayrah, 16, Sophia, 15, Alicia, 10, and Hannah, 3 - were found in the end-terrace house in Tremellen Street, Accrington, in the early hours of Wednesday.

According to reports, firefighters found the bodies after breaking through a bay window at the front of the house.

The girls' father, Mohammed Riaz, is in hospital in a critical condition.

The couple also have a son, 17-year-old Adam, who is being treated for leukaemia in hospital.

At a press conference, Detective Superintendent Mick Gradwell, who is leading the investigation, said that a murder investigation had been launched, because accelerants had been used to start the fire and there were also several seats of fire at the house.

Det Supt Gradwell also said that the house had been secured and locked from the inside and that early indications suggested that whoever started the fire did not leave the premises.

Lancashire Police have appealed for anyone who saw anything suspicious to contact them.
