Doctors 'most trusted' by the public
Doctors are still the professionals the public trusts the most, a new survey has revealed.
The survey, commissioned by the Royal College of Physicians and carried out by Ipsos MORI, found that nine in ten people said that they trusted doctors to tell the truth.
More than 2,000 adults in Britain were asked whether they generally trusted people in 19 different professions to tell the truth or not. Doctors were closely followed by teachers, who were trusted by 88% of people, while eight out of ten trusted professors.
Three-quarters of respondents also said that they trusted judges and clergymen or priests. However, politicians and government ministers were among the least trusted professions, while only one in five adults trusting them to tell the truth.
Journalists were the least trusted of the professions, with only 19% of respondents trusting them to tell the truth.
Doctors have consistently topped the poll since it began in 1983.
Professor Ian Gilmore, President of the Royal College of Physicians, said: "I am delighted that once again, the public have voted doctors the most trusted professional. With patients having access to an increasing range of health facts and figures about their health, it is reassuring to know that the doctor/patient relationship is still highly valued."

Overworked junior doctors could seek legal action, says BMA
Three out of four hospitals are risking legal action because they have failed to meet a deadline on junior doctors' hours, the BMA warned today. A BMA survey earlier this month showed that over half of senior house officers and registrars are still working above the 56-hour limit, and almost a quarter are working over 70 hours a week.

The public continues to place its trust in doctors as the profession once again came top in Ipsos MORI’s poll looking at who the public trusts most to tell the truth. The figures were published during a special session at the British Medical Association’s annual conference in Cardiff today.
