Democrats triumph in US elections
Democrats have picked up the necessary 15 seats to take control of the House of Representatives in the US mid-term elections.
This is the first time in 12 years that Republicans have lost control of the House.
However, the Senate elections are poised in the balance in a neck and neck race that is too close to call. Votes are still being counted in Montana and Virginia - a recount is looking likely in Virginia.
The elections have been hailed as a major victory for the Democrats who have run on a ticket of discontent with the Iraq war.
Leader of the Democrats in the House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi said that the party would take the country in a “new direction.”
It was an election of firsts, Ms Pelosi is destined to become the first female speaker of the House, and the first Muslim congressman Democrat Keith Ellison has been elected.
Mr Ellison played up his populist image and saw off a campaign that saw personal attacks on him and his links with the Nation of Islam group. He has called for an immediate withdrawal of troops from Iraq.
In the upper house, Hillary Clinton easily won her Senate re-election campaign in New York and remains on course to be a leading contender in the Democrat nomination for president.
President George W Bush has scheduled a news conference later today in which he is expected to signal his response to the Democrats election victory.

The Liberal Democrats have pledged to cut the NHS’ ‘hidden’ waiting lists of people awaiting diagnosis. Liberal Democrat leader Charles Kennedy promised to provide £350 million to help cut waiting times for diagnosis for around 500,000 people who, he said, are “languishing” on these “hidden” waiting lists.

The Liberal Democrats have vowed to scrap the "unfair" council tax, on the 15th anniversary of the poll tax riots. The party said that the council tax should be replaced with a local income tax, based on the ability to pay.

January House Prices Show Slight Increase
House prices in England and Wales increased by just 0.9% in January, according to the latest monthly figures from Land Registry. The increase takes the average house price to £186,045. However, the data shows a decline in annual house price changes, from 6.7% last month to 6.4% this month. London experienced annual price growth of 13.
