Footballer stabbed in Manchester bar

West Bromwich Albion player Ronnie Wallwork has been stabbed several times in a Manchester nightclub.

The 29-year-old, who is on loan to Barnsley, is understood to have been attacked in the Sugar Lounge in the city centre on Thursday night.

According to reports, the midfielder, who began has career at Manchester United, was stabbed seven times in the hand, stomach and back. Currently in a stable condition in hospital, his injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.

Greater Manchester Police said that they did not believe that the attack was random.

A statement on Barnsley's website said that the club was "deeply concerned" about Wallwork. It said: "Although we do not know the full facts or circumstances surrounding the incident, we wish him a full and speedy recovery.

"Ronnie has been a model professional during his time at Barnsley Football Club and we will be liaising with West Bromwich Albion FC as to the best course of action."
