Stormy weather disrupts UK

Stormy weather conditions are continuing to cause travel disruption and cut off electricity supplies across the UK.

According to reports, Western Scotland could be hit by more floods, while winds are expected to reach up to 70mph, with parts of Scotland, northern England and Northern Ireland expected to be the worst affected.

In Wales, 80,000 homes have been left without power, while engineers had to deal with 60 power line faults in Scotland.

The severe weather claimed the life of a man in Somerset on Thursday. The man was killed when a tree collapsed on his car in Britty Common.

A search for a woman, believed to have been swept overboard from a cargo ship off the coast of Cornwall, has now been called off.

However, searches are continuing for the crew of two trawlers, which sank off the coast of southeast Ireland. Five men from the Pere Charles are missing, while two men are also missing from Honey Dew II.

Elsewhere, a 17-year-old girl in Warwickshire had to be airlifted to hospital after a tree hit her car. She is thought to be suffering from suspected spinal injuries.

There was also severe flooding around the River Vyrnwy and the River Severn on the border between England and Wales.

However, there is some good news, as forecasters are predicting that brighter weather will be on the way over the weekend.

Forecasters at the BBC's Weather Centre said that the weather on Saturday was not expected to be as windy, while Sunday was expected to be brighter.
