Fatalities as severe weather hits UK

There have been four fatalities as severe gales and heavy rain sweeps across many parts of the UK.

A 49-year-old driver was killed this morning when a branch smashed through the windscreen of his 4x4 in Bridgnorth, Shropshire.

A passenger in a car in Streatly Berkshire was killed when a tree fell on the vehicle he was in. A HGV driver was killed when his vehicle left the Skipton bypass and overturned.

A woman in her 60's was killed when a wall toppled on to her in Stockport, Cheshire.

Shipping has been affected and ferry crossings to the Isle of Wight have been suspended. The port of Dover is closed and cross-channel ferry schedules have been disrupted.

Rail travel has also been affected and east coast mainline services have been curtailed due to the adverse weather.

Scotland has seen its first major snow of the winter. The A9 was closed due to an accumulation of snow.

The strong winds, which are expected to persist throughout the day in most areas, will decrease later this afternoon.

The Met Office said that while data was still being analysed, the last time such high wind speeds were experienced across such a large area of the UK was the Burns' Day storm 25 Jan 1990.
