Police appeal over teenager's rape

Merseyside Police are appealing for witnesses following the rape of a 16-year-old girl on Saturday.

The girl was walking home between 9:30pm and 10pm when she was approached by a man who forced her to waste ground behind St Dunstan Church on Earle Road in Wavertree.

The attacker is described as white, aged around 18 or 19 and of slim build. He was wearing a dark hooded jacket.

Police said that the man was seen near to the bus stop on Earle Road, opposite Tunstall Street, shortly before the attack.

DCI Nikki Holland said: "This was a particularly appalling assault and we firmly believe someone will know who this man is. I am particularly interested in talking to two people who were walking along Earle Road near to the waste ground around the time of the attack.

"I would like to reassure local residents that this kind of assault remains rare and that we are determined to trace the man responsible as soon as possible. Patrols have been stepped up in the Wavertree area to reassure local residents.

DCI Holland also warned women to be extra vigilant and take care when they go out at night. She said: "Try to avoid unlit or dark areas, and if you can, go with a friend and try not to go unaccompanied. If you do come across anything suspicious, contact the police as soon as possible."
