Air Tax 'Greens' Flights

Passengers on flights today will face paying extra as the 'green' Air Passenger Duty is slapped onto ticket prices.

While many passengers have already been charged the controversial tax, some are expected to find that they will have to pay extra tax to fly from today when they turn up at the airport.

The tax hike, announced by Chancellor Gordon Brown in his pre-budget speech, comes into effect today.

Some airlines may absorb the tax for tickets already purchased, but many passengers who booked their tickets before the announcement of the rise, look likely to have to pay the extra as the airline passes on the increase to passengers.

Many low-cost airlines have added the tax onto to intending passengers' credit card bills. This is despite legal uncertainty over whether or not the Treasury could actually collect the tax prior to full Parliamentary approval.
