Man arrested on suspicion of terror offences

A 31-year-old man has been arrested in east London under the Terrorism Act.

Scotland Yard confirmed that the man, reported to be Muslim preacher Abu Izzadeen, was arrested at 9:30am on Thursday morning in Leyton High Road.

It is understood that he was arrested under Section 1 of the Terrorism Act 2006 and is being held for allegedly encouraging terrorism at a central London police station.

The Metropolitan Police said that the arrest was the result of an on-going inquiry.

Mr Izzadeen made the news last September when he heckled Home Secretary John Reid during his first public meeting with Muslims, calling him "an enemy of Islam".
