Body found in search for missing diver

Police searching for a woman who disappeared while diving in a quarry in north Wales have recovered a body.

Police divers had been searching for the woman, who is in her 40s and from Cheshire, since Sunday.

The woman was diving with a male companion at Dorothea Quarry, near Caernarfon, when she got into severe difficulties on becoming entangled in ropes in the water.

The man, aged 45, stayed with her, trying to free her until he was forced to swim to the surface. He was treated at the scene before being airlifted by the RAF to a decompression unit on the Wirral to be treated for shock and the bends. He was discharged on Sunday evening.

North Wales Police confirmed that a body had been found in the quarry shortly before 1am on Thursday morning. No further details have been released.

Dorothea Quarry is a popular area for divers from across the UK. However, 21 people have died there since 1994.
