Sixteen charged following Old Trafford violence
Sixteen football fans have been charged with various offences following violent clashes at the Champions League quarter-final tie between Manchester United and AC Roma at Old Trafford on Tuesday night.
Four Italian supporters and 12 English fans were charged with a variety of offences, including public order offences, criminal damage and possession of a bladed weapon.
The Italian supporters appeared before Manchester City Magistrates' Court on Wednesday, while the English fans are due to attend Trafford Magistrates' Court on April 18.
Twenty-one people were arrested following clashes between football fans and police outside Old Trafford on Tuesday night.
Rival fans reportedly threw missiles including bottles and firecrackers at each other outside the ground, both before and after and the game, while police struggled to keep them apart.
It is believed that 14 of those arrested were English, while seven were Italian.
The trouble followed violence at the first leg of the quarter-final match, which took place at Roma's Olympic Stadium last week.
During violent scenes inside the crowd, Manchester United fans alleged that Italian police had battered them, while several supporters were also stabbed outside the ground.
Both clubs could now face disciplinary action from Uefa.
United went on to win the match 7-1 to reach the semi-finals of the Champions League competition. In last night's other match, fellow Premiership team Chelsea also qualified for the semi-finals after beating Valencia 2- 1 in Spain.

Eleven England fans deported following Monday riot
A Portuguese judge has sentenced a 46-year-old England football fan to two years in prison for his part in a riot in the Algarve. Gary Mann, from Faversham in Kent, will be deported to serve the custodial sentence in an English jail. Ten other English fans arrested will also face deportation. One further England supporter was found not guilty.

Police Appeal Over Officer's Blinding
A policeman has lost the use of one eye after being hit by a missile after a Manchester soccer match. The victim, who is 24, was trying to deal with a disturbance among rival fans outside the City of Manchester Stadium last month when he was hit by an object.

Final UK Stage Of Tour de France Underway
The final stage of the Tour de France to be held in the UK got underway this morning in Cambridge. The 197 riders will follow a 96-mile route from Cambridge to London, with the winner of the stage expected to reach the city before 16:00 today. The projected timings for today's stage are: 12:15 : Cambridge.
