Travel warning for football fans

Football fans heading to this weekend's FA Cup final at the new Wembley Stadium on May 9 are being advised to check for possible delays and to expect the roads to be busy.

The Highways Agency is warning fans travelling to the game, between Chelsea and Manchester United, that motorways and major roads including the M60, M62, M1 and M40 are likely to be busy both before and after the game, which is due to kick off at 3pm on Saturday.

Fans travelling to Wembley are also being advised of the following works due to take place on Saturday, which have speed limits in place and may cause delays:

  • A resurfacing scheme on the M60 between junctions 1 and 2 (Stockport), where a 40mph speed restriction will be in place at all times

  • On the M6 between junction 12 and 13, three narrow lanes will be in operation during the day with an enforced 40mph speed limit, while only one lane will be in open in each direction overnight

  • Continuing work on the M1 widening scheme between junctions 6a and 10. During the day, three narrow lanes on the M1 are open to traffic in both directions, while a 50mph speed limit will be in place at all times, enforced with average speed safety cameras

Up to the minute advice will be available from the Highways Agency Information Line on: 08457 504030 or on the website at: www.highways.gov.uk

The Metropolitan Police also confirmed that more than 1,000 officers will on duty at the event. They have urged football fans to use public transport as there is no general public parking at the new stadium.
