Salmond elected First Minister in Scotland

Alex Salmond has been elected First Minister of Scotland, the first Nationalist to do so.

The leader of the Scottish National Party beat Labour leader and former First Minister Jack McConnell by 49 votes to 46.

Mr Salmond was supported by two Green MSPs, while the Liberal Democrats and the Conservatives abstained.

The victory will allow him to establish the first minority administration since devolution.

The Scottish National Party won 47 seats at the Scottish Parliament election nearly two weeks ago, while the Scottish Labour party won 46 seats, the Scottish Conservatives won 17 seats and the Scottish Liberal Democrats won 16 seats.

Following his victory, Mr Salmond said that Scotland was "a small nation", but it had a "big future". He said: "In this century there are limits to what governments can achieve. But one thing any government I lead will never lack is ambition for Scotland."
