Man dies in M4 crash

A man has been killed and two people have been seriously injured in a crash on the M4 between Bath and Bristol.

Three cars - a black Jaguar, a silver Nissan Almera and a Volkswagen Bora - were involved in the collision on the westbound section of motorway between junctions 18 and 19, which was reported just after 11pm on Thursday night.

The male driver of the Almera was pronounced dead at the scene, while a male passenger in the car was taken by air ambulance to Frenchay Hospital with serious life-threatening abdominal injuries.

The passenger in the Jaguar was also taken to the same hospital, suffering from serious life-threatening head injuries.

The two people in the Volkswagen were not injured in the incident.

The driver of the Jaguar - a 36-year-old man from Gwent - was arrested at the scene on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and driving a motor vehicle, while under the influence of alcohol. He was released on police bail, pending further enquiries.

Police have appealed for witnesses, particularly anyone that was travelling along the M4 between junction 18 and 19 last night around 11pm. Police said that they were specifically seeking any information about the Jaguar, which was seen driving in the third lane of the motorway shortly before the collision.

Anyone with any information is asked to contact police on: 0845 4567000.
