British soldier killed in Afghan accident

A British soldier has died during a "tragic accident" in Afghanistan, the Ministry of Defence has confirmed.

The soldier, from 1st Battalion Royal Anglian Regiment, died at the British base in Sangin on Sunday.

A statement issued by the MoD said: "The circumstances of the accident will be the subject of an investigation and no further details will be released until that investigation is complete, but we can confirm that the soldier's death was not the result of enemy action."

The MoD also confirmed that the soldier's family had been informed.

The death is the 55th to occur among British forces in Afghanistan, since operations began in 2001.
