Chemical blaze near M6 now 'under control'
A fire sparked by a chemical explosion at a Lancashire industrial estate, which led to the closure of parts of the M6, is now under control.
The blaze broke out shortly after 6am on Monday morning on the Veolia Cleanaway site on the Red Scar industrial estate in Ribbleton, Preston.
A police spokesperson said that it was believed that a number of chemical drums were exploding at the site.
People living near the site were advised to stay indoors and keep their windows closed until further notice.
The blaze resulted in the closure of the M6 between junctions 31 and 32, although it has since reopened.
Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service said that ten pumps were used to fight the fire.
Police have appealed for motorists to remain patient and calm while traffic congestion is cleared.

Heroic Tyne Firemen Honoured
Two Tyne and Wear firefighters are to be recognised for their bravery at a special ceremony today. Andrew Nelson and Allan Richardson will be presented with the Chief Fire Officer's Commendations for brave and meritorious conduct after saving a man's life. The men took part in a dramatic rescue in the early hours of 4 February.

Firefighters launch four-day strike
More than 1,000 firefighters across Merseyside have begun a four-day strike in protest over planned job cuts. Another four-day stoppage is scheduled to begin two hours after the first one ends.

Motorists have been advised to avoid the Fairglen interchange at Rayleigh and the Carpenters Arms roundabout as smoke from a large tyre fire has reduced visibility. A stack of tyres more than 160ft long and 6ft tall on a waste storage site have been burning since Monday night.

Suspicious Glasgow Car Fires
Detectives in Glasgow's East End are investigating a spate of vehicle fire attacks in the city yesterday. Shortly after 3.30am police were called to a report of a vehicle fire in Ashvale Crescent, Glasgow. Upon arrival police were advised by Strathclyde Fire Service that four vehicles had been damaged by fire.
