Flood misery continues in South Yorkshire

Residents in the areas worst affected by last week's floods in South Yorkshire are facing further misery, after the news that they may have to wait up to three days before the streets are pumped dry.

The news came as 280 people from Bentley and Toll Bar, near Doncaster, were forced to spend another night in rest centres because of the floods.

Doncaster mayor Martin Winter said that there had been a "dramatic reduction" in water levels in Bentley and also said that emergency services were "finally making an impact" in Toll Bar.

He added that the Met Office had withdrawn its severe warnings for the area on Monday and Tuesday and said that with the continuing fall in water levels at both the River Don and Ea Beck, emergency services would be able to remove the remaining water.

However, the Environment Agency still have three severe flood warnings in place for South Yorkshire, including one at Ea Beck at Toll Bar and along the River Don at Bentley.

Forecasters have said that the weather will remain unsettled over the next few days, but said that the rain will ease off and not be as intense as last week's downpours.

Police in the worst affected areas of Humberside and South Yorkshire have stepped up patrols amid rumours that there has been looting of abandoned homes, although police have said that there have been no official reports of such incidents.

With 27,000 homes and 5,000 businesses affected by the severe weather across the UK, insurers have warned that the cost of the damage is expected to top £1 billion.
