Royal couple expecting baby

The Countess of Wessex and Prince Edward are expecting a baby in December, Buckingham Palace has announced.

A spokesperson for Sophie, 42 and the Earl of Wessex, 43, said that the couple were "thrilled and excited" about the news.

The couple, who have been married for eight years, already have a daughter - three-year-old Lady Louise Windsor - who was born four weeks prematurely in 2003.

The Countess had previously suffered a life-threatening ectopic pregnancy in 2001.

The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh are both said to be "delighted" at the news. The baby will be their eighth grandchild.

Sophie Rhys-Jones married Prince Edward at St George's Chapel in Windsor in June 1999.
