Explosion outside British embassy in Chile

A small explosion has occurred outside the British and Israeli embassies in Chile.

It is understood that the explosion took place in the capital, Santiago, around 2200 local time on Sunday.

A spokesperson for the Foreign Office said that there had been no immediate reports of casualties.

Minor damage was caused to the buildings.

It was reported that a small cylinder containing gunpowder caused the explosion.

Around 50,000 British tourists visit Chile annually. The Foreign Office web site says that the threat from terrorism was low in the country, but warned that there were occasional acts of low-level domestic terrorism by left-wing groups, such as noise bombs, but said that these have not been directed at foreigners.
