Sainsbury's Launch £1 Million Fairtrade Plan
UK supermarket chain Sainsbury's today announced plans to launch a £1 million fund to enable farmers in developing countries to join the Fairtrade initiative.
The Sainsbury's Fair Development Fund will spend £1 million over a four-year period, in a campaign to support producers in some of the poorest developing countries to join Fairtrade.
Sainsbury's will join forces with Comic Relief, who will manage project grants with advice from the Fairtrade Foundation.
Justin King, Chief Executive of Sainsbury's said: "The new fund will help to dramatically extend the benefits Fairtrade creates to more farmers and workers in new areas, which have previously not been Fairtrade accredited."
Harriet Lamb, Chief Executive of the Fairtrade Foundation, said: "Too many smallholder groups, especially in Africa, want to support themselves by selling their products as Fairtrade but they need assistance to get started. This fund will help fill that gap."
Under the fund, a pilot scheme to enable farmers in rural Uganda to supply dried fruits to an export market is being considered. Another proposal includes a credit fund to aid peanut farmers in Malawi to buy seeds and machinery in order to encourage production.
The fund, launched today on Sainsbury's fifth 'Make the difference' day, also marks the supermarket's achievement in converting all of its bananas to Fairtrade. The conversion follows the supermarket's announcement eight months ago that it would be the first UK retailer to switch to 100% Fairtrade bananas by July 2007.
