Sixty New Consultant Posts Announced By HSE
Ireland's Health Service Executive has announced 60 new consultant posts for 24 hospitals that have high-performing Accident and Emergency departments.
The move is part of the HSE's 100 Plus reward scheme, under which the HSE pledged to appoint 100 new consultants to hospitals whose A&E departments met their targets.
It is expected that the appointments of the remaining 40 consultants will be made by the end of October.
The appointments will cover a range of specialty areas, including emergency medicine, radiology, general medicine and surgery and geriatrics.
The hospitals receiving the consultants include Dublin's St James and St Vincents hospitals, which will receive six consultants each; Waterford Regional Hospital, which will receive five posts; and University College Hospital Galway, which will get four consultants.
However, the appointments are not likely to be made until talks on a new contract for consultants are completed, which are expected to take some time.

Whooping Cough Cases 'High'
Figures published by the Health Protection Agency (HPA) show that cases of whooping cough have continued at high levels. In November there was 1,080 confirmed cases reported for England and Wales, bringing the total number of cases so far this year to 8,819. No deaths were reported in November.

'Black Alert' Hospital Cancels Routine Operations
Plymouth Hospitals Trust in Devon has cancelled more than 1,000 routine operations, according to a report by the BBC. It is understood that the hospital has been on "black alert" since January: a black alert is issue when a hospital is overwhelmed by demand.

Women Diagnosed With Cancer Following Recall Of Patients
Six out of 30 women recalled following concerns about breast cancer screenings have been diagnosed with the disease. Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust recalled the women after a review of 626 cases between 2011 and 2014. It is understood that all the women were screened by the same radiologist.

Consultant surgeon will be able to opt out of the NHS rating system, throwing the value of the system into doubt. The Guardian have reported that NHS England has conceded that under the Data Protection Act, consultant will be legally allowed to not submit performance data.
