Murder Inquiry Launched Into Swiss Student's Death In Galway

Gardaí in Galway city have launched a murder investigation after the body of a young female Swiss student was found on wasteland in the city.

The body of 18-year-old Manuela Riedo, a student from Bern in Switzerland, was found on waste ground between Lakeshore Drive and Ceannt Railway Station around 9:30am on Tuesday morning by a man walking his dog.

A post-mortem revealed that the teenager had been strangled, but gardaí have not revealed details of any other injuries she may have suffered.

It is understood that Miss Riedo had only recently arrived in Ireland in order to take up a two-week English studies course. She was staying with a host family in the city's Renmore Park area for the duration of the course and was last seen leaving the house around 7:30pm on Monday night.

Her family are understood to be travelling to Ireland from Switzerland.

Gardaí have appealed for information. On Wednesday afternoon they released a description of Miss Reido. She was 5ft 4ins tall, with brown shoulder length hair. When last seen, she was wearing a red and black cardigan, a grey and black herring bone waist length wool coat, grey jeans and calf length black suede boots. She also had a diamond stud in the left side of her nose and carried a large black handbag with a cherry pattern.
