Tackle Population Timebomb: Cameron

The Government has been accused of failing to tackle the UK's population timebomb.

Conservative leader David Cameron used his first major speech on immigration to target Labour's record to date on the issue and to seek what he called a 'coherent strategy' to cope with the extra pressures on key services like police, health and education.

Addressing the Policy Exchange 'think-tank' in London, he warned that high levels of immigration, and the growth in the number of households as more people choose to live alone, threatened the ability of a future Tory government to deliver on its political and social goals.

He also argued that it is essential to develop policies to curb net immigration while reducing the rate of household formation.

The move follows the latest projections from the Office for National Statistics which forecast that Britain's population - currently just over 60 million - will hit 71 million by 2031.

Mr Cameron announced that the Tories planned to set out a range of policies to reduce the UK's reliance on immigrant labour by improving the skills base in Britain.
