Dando Killing Appeal Opens
The London Court Of Appeal has begun hearing a fresh appeal by the man jailed for life for the murder of TV presenter Jill Dando.
Barry George was in the dock at the Court of Appeal in London to hear his QC, William Clegg, announce that the "evidential significance" of that single particle of firearm discharge residue formed the sole ground of the appeal.
It is the 47-year-old's second appeal over a jury's 2001 verdict that he shot the 37-year-old BBC News, Crimewatch and Holiday presenter on the steps of her home in Fulham, south west London, in April 1999.
The Lord Chief Justice, Lord Phillips, Lord Justice Leveson and Mr Justice Simon, are being asked to rule that George's conviction has been rendered unsafe because of fresh evidence relating to the firearms evidence.
Mr Clegg told the court: "Although there was clearly other important evidence in addition to the FDR (firearm discharge residue), the effect of neutralising the FDR evidence must be to render the conviction unsafe."
