'Missing' Canoe Man Arrested

John Darwin, the man who reappeared after it was thought he had drowned in a canoe accident five years ago, has been arrested on suspicion of fraud.

The 57-year-old, who was presumed dead after the remains of his canoe were found on a beach in Seaton Carew, near Hartlepool in Teesside in March 2002, walked into a police station in central London at the weekend and told officers that he could not remember where he had been and thought he was a missing person. He said that he could not remember anything since June 2000.

It is understood that Mr Darwin was arrested by Hampshire Police on Tuesday evening.

The arrest comes as the Daily Mirror published a photograph of Mr Darwin with his wife Anne, which is alleged to be of the couple in Panama in 2006.

The newspaper said that the photo of the couple was taken from relocation company Move To Panama.

Mrs Darwin cashed in her husband's life insurance policy after he was declared dead by a coroner in 2003.

She sold the couple's house in Seaton Carew three months ago and moved to Panama.

Mr Darwin's two sons, Anthony and Mark, released a statement through Cleveland Police which said that the news of their father's reappearance was a "huge shock" to the whole family, but said that they were "extremely happy".

On Wednesday, Detective Superintendent Tony Hutchinson from Cleveland Police revealed that the investigation into Mr Darwin's disappearance had been reopened three months ago, due to some information that police had received. However, he said that police did not know that Mr Darwin was alive until his reappearance at the weekend.

A worldwide appeal for information about Mr Darwin's movements over the last five years has also been launched. Anyone with any information is asked to contact: 0800 056 0944 (UK) or: 00 44 20 7158 0010 (international) or email: darwininfo@cleveland.pnn.police.uk.
