Probe Into Unlawful Bugging Allegations
Justice Secretary Jack Straw has ordered a probe into the alleged claims that police may have unlawfully bugged an MP.
A letter sent to Government by Shadow Home Secretary David Davis warned that counter-terrorism officers secretly recorded discussions between Labour MP Sadiq Khan and Babar Ahmad - a constituent and childhood friend - who is in prison awaiting deportation to the US.
Mr Straw, who is expected to make a statement to the Commons today, said he has no knowledge of what had happened but that it is "completely unacceptable" for MPs' conversations to be recorded.
The conversations alleged to have been recorded took place in 2005 and 2006 at Woodhill Prison, in Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire.
A code known as the Wilson Doctrine forbids the covert recording of conversations between MPs and their constituents. The Commons home affairs select committee said it would investigate the allegations as part of its inquiry into the "surveillance society".
Committee chairman Keith Vaz will be questioning senior police officers with responsibility for counter-terrorism, together with Home Office Minister Tony McNulty. Mr Vaz has said if the allegations are true, they will take the surveillance society into an entirely new dimension.
Police are allowed to monitor prisoners' communications but such operations must be approved first by the surveillance commissioner who weighs them up on a case-by-case basis.
Scotland Yard has refused to comment on the allegations, made in the Sunday Times.

Goldsmith accepts Met Chief's apology
The Attorney General has accepted an apology from Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Ian Blair after he admitted secretly taping phone conversations. A spokesperson for Lord Goldsmith said that he had accepted the apology and now considered the matter closed.

Janice Atkinson And Chief Of Staff Expelled From UKIP
MEP Janice Atkinson has been expelled from UKIP amid an alleged expenses scandal. It follows allegations raised in a newspaper report that Ms Atkinson's chief of staff, Christine Hewitt, was recorded asking for an invoice to be made out in a larger amount than a bill actually cost. Ms Hewitt has also been expelled from the party.

Five New Charges To Be Brought Against Stuart Hall
Lancashire Police have confirmed that they are investigating fresh allegations made against former broadcaster Stuart Hall. Hall was jailed in July after admitting 14 counts of indecent assault against girls as young as nine between 1967 and 1987. His sentence of 15 months was doubled by the Court of Appeal after it ruled that it was too lenient.

Ex-Radio 1 DJ and Top of the Pops presenter Dave Lee Travis has been arrested for a second time, following fresh allegations of sexual offences, Scotland Yard has confirmed. Mr Travis, of Mentmore, Bucks, was arrested on Monday after answering bail following his first arrest in November 2012 as part of Operation Yewtree.
