Judge Gives Go-Ahead On Police Pay Challenge
A judge presiding on the case involving whether police should have the permission to launch a High Court challenge to a government decision not to backdate their pay, said he had "no hesitation" in ruling there was a case to apply for judicial review.
Mr Justice Collins gave his consent for Police Federation lawyers to challenge a Home Office decision not to backdate a 2.5% pay rise for police in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.
The lawyers told the High Court officers had a "legitimate expectation" they would receive the full 2.5% increase decided through the independent Police Arbitration Tribunal.
Officers in Scotland are having their 2.5% pay rise backdated to the start of the police pay year, 1 September - as the tribunal recommended - but those in other areas are receiving it in full only from December. This, officers say, will amount in annual terms to an increase of only 1.9%.
This decision from Mr Justice Collins comes just weeks after 22,000 police officers took to the streets of central London to stage a peaceful protest against the decision.
The hearing will take place before two judges on 15 April.
