Teen Bailed Over Manchester Assault

A teenager arrested in connection with a serious assault in Manchester has been released on bail.

It is understood that the 17-year-old handed himself into police voluntarily and was arrested on suspicion of violent disorder.

The arrest relates to an assault, which left 26-year-old David Burns critically ill in hospital, suffering from serious head injuries.

Mr Burns, an insurance worker, was attacked by a gang of youths after suffering verbal abuse as he walked home from a pub in Droylsden in Greater Manchester on Sunday night.

Police said that he had been subjected to name-calling after leaving the Strawberry Gardens pub with two friends to return to his home in Malvern Avenue.

The gang then followed them to an address in Langfield Crescent, where they continued to cause trouble.

Police said that all three had gone outside to investigate, but it is thought that Mr Burns became separated from his friends and was encircled by the gang. He was punched in the face and fell to the ground, banging his head. The gang then ran off in the direction of Warne Avenue.

He was taken to Tameside General Hospital, but was later transferred to Hope Hospital in Salford, where his condition is now described as stable.
