Newlove Killer 'May Appeal'

One of the gang convicted of killing father-of-three Garry Newlove is considering launching an appeal against his sentence, it has been reported.

Adam Swellings, 19, from Crewe, was jailed for life on Monday, along with 17-year-old Stephen Sorton from Warrington and 16-year-old Jordan Cunliffe, formerly of Warrington.

Swellings was ordered to serve a minimum sentence of 17 years, while Sorton and Cunliffe received minimum sentences of 15 years and 12 years respectively.

Swellings' solicitor, Patrick Heald, said that his client's sentence was more than parliament's recommendation of 15 years for similar crimes and said that Swellings would consider appealing against the conviction and sentence.

Mr Newlove, 47, was attacked by a gang of youths outside his home in Warrington, Cheshire, on August 10 last year when he went to confront them about vandalism to vehicles in his street.

During the trial, the court heard how he was kicked "like a football" in front of his wife and daughters. He suffered massive head injuries and died two days later in hospital.

On Tuesday, 'The Sun' newspaper printed an interview with Mr Newlove's widow Helen, in which she called for the death penalty for her husband's killers. She told the newspaper: "If we had the electric chair like in America, I'd watch them fry without the slightest feeling of sympathy. It's an eye for an eye in my book."
