Afghanistan Death Confirmed

It has been confirmed that a soldier from 40 Commando Royal Marines has been killed in an explosion in Afghanistan.

It happened on Wednesday, with one other marine also injured in the incident, and since described as "walking wounded".

The Marines, from the 40 Commando Royal Marines Battlegroup, were taking part in an outreach patrol in Viking vehicles to disrupt enemy forces north of Sangin in the southern Afghan Province of Helmand when they were involved in the explosion.

The marine was pronounced dead at the scene before he and the injured soldier were evacuated to the ISAF medical facilities at Camp Bastion, where the injured marine received treatment for a minor injury.

Meanhwhile, around 100 TA part time 'rangers' from 2 Royal Irish in Northern Ireland is about to deploy as a fully formed company in Afghanistan - alongside their regular army colleagues.

It has been announed that the Royal Irish Battle Group, which is part of the elite 16 Air Assault Brigade, will be a substantial 600-strong force.

Blast Kills Marines In Afghanistan
The Royal Marine Corps has suffered two more casualties. The Ministry of Defence (MoD) confirmed today that the British naval personnel were killed in an explosion in Afghanistan. The members of 40 Commando Royal Marines, were on a routine patrol on Sunday when the pair were hit by what is thought to be a roadside bomb.

UK special forces soldier confirmed dead in Iraq firefight
A British special forces soldier has been killed during a firefight in Iraq, it has been confirmed. Corporal Ian Plank, 31, was among a group of SBS and SAS soldiers attacking an Al Qaida training camp believed to be in northern Iraq when he shot and killed last Friday. Four other British soldiers have been reported as injured during the exchange.
