M&S To Charge For Carrier Bags
High Street retailer Marks and Spencer has announced plans to charge customers 5p for each plastic bag they use.
Customers at the company's stores will be given free long-lasting bags from the beginning of April, before the new charge is introduced on May 6.
The scheme, which will only apply to stores in the UK, will see all the funds raised going to the Groundwork Trust.
The move follows a trial at 50 Marks & Spencer stores in Northern Ireland and southwest England, which saw the demand for plastic carrier bags drop by more than 70%.
M&S Chief Executive Sir Stuart Rose said: "We want to make it easy for our customers to do their bit to help the environment and our trials have shown is that they want to take action.
"Our customers will be raising valuable funds to go to our partner charity, Groundwork, to invest in much-needed green spaces in our neighbourhoods."
Sir Stuart said that if M&S customers across the UK reduced the number of plastic bags they used by 70%, it would reduce the number of bags used each year by 280 million.
Every year, British retailers give out 13 billion plastic bags free to customers - an average of 216 per person - and they take 1,000 years to decay.

The poll of 1,752 English adults found that 56% agreed a 5p carrier bag charge was not unreasonable even in a time of austerity, as it had been proved to reduce litter and waste.

PM Warns Stores Over Plastic Bags
Prime Minister Gordon Brown has warned retailers that he will force them to cut the number of plastic bags they use, unless they take action to reduce them voluntarily. Mr Brown made his comments in an article in the 'Daily Mail', which is campaigning for plastic bags to be banned.

Shoppers In England To Pay 5p Plastic Bag Charge
Shoppers in England will have to pay a 5p charge for plastic carrier bags as a new levy comes into effect today, 05 October. Shoppers at all supermarkets and large shops will now be required to use their own bags or be charged for plastic bags. England is the last country in the UK to enforce the charge.

An increasing number of Britons are opting for plastic surgery, according to the latest figures. The British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS) said that its members carried out 22,041 surgical procedures last year - an increase of 34.6% since 2004.
