Conservatives Pledge Extra Jail Places

Conservative leader David Cameron has said that his party would build 5,000 additional jail places in England and Wales.

The party has published a Green Paper on prison reform which lays out plans for the prison system which a Conservative government would introduce.

The proposals include the introduction of minimum and maximum sentence periods, with no possibility of parole until the minimum sentence had been served.

The additional spaces would be used to end the system of automatic release for prisoners after they have completed half the jail term handed down in court.

The plans also include proposals to sell off 30 Victorian jails in city centres for redevelopment and the introduction of a victims' fund, with those serving prison sentences contributing via work in prison.

Party leader David Cameron said that what was needed was "a new principle of honesty in sentencing, a new generation of prisons and a new model of prison management".
