UK Student Killed In Guyana Cliff Fall

A teenager from the UK has been killed in a fall from a cliff in Guyana.

Pamela McCarroll, 18, from Beith in Ayrshire, is believed to have slipped and fallen 300ft while rock climbing at the Tutawau Falls in South Central Rupunini.

Miss McCarroll had been working as a volunteer teacher, teaching science to an indigenous community at a secondary school in Lethem, near the Guyana-Brazil border, through the Scottish-based charity Project Trust.

She had been due to return to Scotland in August.

A spokesperson for Project Trust told reporters that Miss McCarroll was "an admirable teacher" and was "very conscientious and hard-working".

Police in Guyana have launched an investigation into Miss McCarroll's death. It has also been reported that John Fraser, Assistant Director of Project Trust, is flying out to the country.
