Gambler Loses Case Against Bookies

A compulsive gambler who lost more than £2 million has failed in his High Court bid to force bookmaker William Hill to repay his losses.

Graham Calvert, 28, from Houghton-le-Spring in Tyne and Wear had claimed that William Hill had allowed him to continue placing bets after he had asked them to close his account under the company's self-exclusion policy.

Mr Calvert, a greyhound trainer, claimed that his gambling habit had cost him his wife, health and livelihood.

However, William Hill had denied any wrongdoing, claiming that they could not be held legally liable for Mr Calvert's losses.

Mr Justice Briggs said that although William Hill had takent reasonable steps to prevent Mr Calvert from telephone gambling, his pathological habit would still probably have led to his financial ruin anyway.

Summing up, the judge said: "William Hill's failure to take reasonable care to exclude him from telephone gambling... did not therefore cause Mr Calvert any measurable financial or other loss."

Mr Calvert has been ordered to pay £175,000 interim costs to William Hill, but the payment has been placed on hold, pending an appeal.
