Man Remanded Over Shannon 'Abduction'

A 39-year-old man charged with kidnap and false imprisonment of Shannon Matthews has been remanded in custody until 26 March by Dewsbury magistrates.

Michael Donovan, of Lidgate Gardens, Dewsbury, West Yorkshire, stands accused of abducting the youngster on February 19.

The nine-year-old girl was found at a flat in Batley Carr, West Yorkshire by police on Friday, 24 days after she went missing.

There was no application for bail made by Mr Donavan's solicitor, Malcolm Knowle.

He will next appear via video link at Leeds Crown Court.

West Yorkshire Chief Constable Sir Norman Bettison said that his officers have interviewed 6,000 people and searched 3,000 homes over the past three weeks.

News sources say that Shannon is now in the care of the Kirklees Family Services on a voluntary basis and will not return home for some time.

Around 60 detectives are still working on the case.
