Naked Truth As Sarkozy Calls For 'Franco-British Brotherhood'

French President Nicolas Sarkozy has called for the establishment of a "new Franco-British brotherhood" ahead of his first state visit to the UK - although the trip has already been clouded by the emergence of an embarrassing photograph of his ex-model wife - naked.

Mr Sarkozy gave an interview to BBC Radio 4's 'Today' programme in which he stressed the importance of Britain's participation in Europe. He said: "How can we do without your strong economy, your language which is the most spoken language throughout the world and your defence, which is the most significant in Europe?"

Mr Sarkozy arrived at Heathrow airport, along with his wife, Italian supermodel-turned-singer Carla Bruni on Wednesday. The couple were greeted by Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall, before they were taken to Windsor Castle to meet the Queen and Prince Philip.

During his two-day visit to the UK, Mr Sarkozy will meet with Prime Minister Gordon Brown. The two leaders are expected to discuss nuclear power, illegal immigration and Afghanistan.

During his visit, Mr Sarkozy will also address both Houses of Parliament and be the Queen's guest at a state banquet at Windsor Castle.

However, Mr Sarkozy's visit could be overshadowed by the publication of a photograph of his wife posing naked.

The photograph of Ms Bruni, which was taken by Michel Comte in 1993, is to be auctioned by Christie's next month.

Ms Bruni is reported to be extremely upset that the photograph has emerged at the same time as Mr Sarkozy's visit to the UK.
