Eight Terror Suspects To Stand Trial
Eight men accused of conspiring to blow up transatlantic airliners with liquid explosives are to stand trial.
Abdulla Ahmed Ali, Assad Sarwar, Tanvir Hussain, Mohammed Guizar, Ibrahim Savant, Arafat Waheed Khan, Waheed Zaman and Umar Islam are charged with conspiracy to murder.
The arrests in August 2006 caused chaos with over 1,000 flights being cancelled and baggage restrictions being set in place for several days.
Mr Justice Calvert-Smith told potential jurors at Woolwich Crown Court: "This concerns an allegation that in 2006 a number of men planned to create bombs which some of their number would take on board passenger aircraft flying from London Heathrow to various destinations in Canada and the USA."
It is thought that the trial could last up to eight months.
A police spokeswoman said: "It is the biggest counter-terrorism trial in the world that's ever been seen, I would suggest."

A middle-aged mother has been cleared of all accusations that she was running a brothel out of her bedfordshire bungalow. Claire Astrid Finch, 49, had fought the case - against over whelming evidence - to highlight the plight of prostitutes who want to work from home, but want the safety of having other women with them.

Life term for 'MI5 Spy' conman
A former barman and car salesman who posed as an MI5 agent to con his marks out of almost £1 million, has received a life sentence. Robert Hendy-Freegard, 34, from Blyth in Nottinghamshire told his victims that they were being pursued by the IRA. Some of his victims had to carry out bizarre missions over his ten-year reign of terror.

UK Ratifies Treaty With Jordan
A joint treaty between Jordan and the UK, which will allow for the extradition of Abu Qatada, has been signed into law. Following the completion of the remaining formalities, including the publication of the treaty in an official Jordanian newspaper and an exchange of diplomatic letters, the new treaty will come into force.

Met Police Commander Faces Misconduct Charges
Metropolitan Police Commander Ali Dizaei is facing charges of misconduct in public office and perverting the course of justice. The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) said the charges relate to an investigation by the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC), and are linked to an incident at a south west London restaurant last year.
