The Queen Offers "Significant" Cyclone Donation

Buckingham Palace has revealed that The Queen has made an undisclosed personal donation to the Myanmar Cyclone appeal.

The Palace, who would only describe the amount as "significant", noted that Her Majesty is a patron of the Red Cross, one of the lead agencies tasked with mounting the international aid effort in Burma.

A spokesperson said: "We can confirm the Queen has made a significant personal donation to the Burma cyclone relief appeal."

The aftermath of cyclone Nargis, which struck a week ago, has left an estimated 1.9 million people struggling to survive, according to the UN.

Figures suggest that Nargis has resulted in at least 102,000 fatalities, although this number is expected to rise.

Last week, the British Foreign Office said 17 Briton were reported missing after the disaster.

The Foreign Office confirmed that families and friends were having difficulties making contact with these individuals.

The initial relief effort in the region was slow, which many claimed was hindered by Burma’s government, but aid is now gradually reaching the worst affected areas.
