City Confirm Eriksson Departure

Manchester City have confirmed that manager Sven-Goran Eriksson has left the club.

Speculation had been rife that City owner Thaksin Shinawatra would replace Eriksson after only one season, despite the Swede leading the club to UEFA Cup qualification.

"I have enjoyed my time at Manchester City very much and I would like to thank the fans, players and staff for their amazing support," said Eriksson.

The former England boss took over as City manager last summer and still had two years left on his contract.

City chief executive Alistair Mackintosh said: "The board of directors and all at Manchester City would like to thank Sven for his efforts and contributions throughout the season.

"We wish him well for the future. Sven remains a friend of the club."

Eriksson spent around £46m in the summer, bringing in a number of new players. The new arrivals bedded in immediately and the team occupied third spot in the Premier League table in November. However, results nose-dived at the turn of the year and former Thailand Prime Minister Thaksin was said to be unhappy with the performances and was planning to bring in a new manager.

Blackburn Rovers have "reluctantly" granted permission to Manchester City to speak with their manager Mark Hughes, in relation to the vacant position at the City of Manchester Stadium.

A statement on Rovers' official website read: "Mark has made it clear to the Board that he would like the opportunity to talk with Manchester City.

"In view of this the Board have decided reluctantly to give permission subject to terms and conditions acceptable to Blackburn Rovers being agreed with Manchester City in advance.

Eriksson, meanwhile, may not be out of the game for too long, with speculation suggesting he is already being lined up to become the new manager of the Mexican national team.
