Tragic Helicopter Had Attempted Emergency Landing

An investigation into the deaths of four men in a helicopter crash has found that the pilot was attempting a landing when disaster struck.

The Robinson R44 had been carrying out "low level circling manoeuvres" when it crashed near Kendal on August 3, last year.

Gary Priestly, 39, Tim Newburn, 39, Andy Patrick, 37, of Yorkshire and Peter Patrick, 68, of Arkholme, Lancashire, died on impact.

The Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) said that the helicopter, which had been hired from a flying school, flew into low cloud.

The investigation found that the craft had flow as low as 200ft, circling farm buildings before it crashed.

The three younger men had been flying across the Pennines to pick up Mr Patrick's father Peter, before flying to Cornockle, near Lockerbie.

The alarm was raised when the party did not arrive at their destination.

It is understood that the weather conditions were bad with low cloud and visibility down to 1,500 metres.

The report also found that the craft was overloaded by 80 lbs and that its centre of gravity was outside its flying limits.

The men had worked for Huddersfield company Termrim Construction.
