Police Arrest Man Over 'Horrific' Attack

A 23-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, in relation to a man being set alight.

The victim, believed to be in his 20s, was attacked at around 11.20pm on Saturday 14 June in Templedene Avenue, Staines.

The injured man was taken to St Peter's Hospital, in Chertsey, and later transferred to the Queen Victoria Hospital, East Grinstead, West Sussex - where he is listed as "critical".

Police officers have been carrying out a forensic examination of the scene and nearby area in their search for anything that could be related to the incident.

Surrey Police say the arrest was made after 4pm yesterday and the suspect will be questioned today.

Police say they are looking for anyone who saw a "slim man wearing dark clothing running away from the scene shortly after the assault".

It is understood he ran down an alleyway leading to Templedene Avenue towards Berryscroft Road, Arnold Road and Elizabeth Avenue.

Police are said to be unable to offer any motive for the brutal attack.

Chief Inspector Mark Preston-Heard said it was "a horrific and unprovoked attack on a young man".
