Man Charged With Bus Murder

A 23-year-old Peterlee man, just named by ITN as Gary Robson, 23, has gone before the local Magistrates' Court in Co Durham charged over the death of Stan Dixon.

According to police, Mr Dixon died from serious head injuries after he was allegedly attack on a bus between Hartlepool and Horden, on Saturday.

He and his partner Anne Fisher, 41, were travelling home when they allegedly told off a fellow passenger for swearing.

Former soldier, Mr Dixon, of Horden, was on the 243 Arriva bus when he became involved in the row.

Mr Dixon and Ms Fisher tried to dismount the vehicle following the disagreement, but he was left suffering serious injuries and lying on the pavement.

It is understood that both Mr Dixon and his companion had been punched after verbally tackling a group who were reportedly swearing.

Emergency services were called and Mr Dixon was found unconscious on the ground.

Mr Dixon died in Newcastle General Hospital on Wednesday at 3.15pm.

Detectives have been studying CCTV footage from the bus in a bid to establish what happened.

It is reported that after his army service Mr Dixon worked as a mechanic in Hartlepool before retiring on ill health.

He has been described by friends and neighbours as a "true gentleman".

Mr Dixon is survived by his son Paul, 34 and daughters June, 31 and Louise, 25.

London Bus Drivers Postpone Strike Action
Planned strike action by London bus drivers has been postponed as an "act of goodwill". The strike action was due to take place on Friday and Monday, with drivers walking out across the city's 18 bus companies. Unite the union has called on the bus companies to accept an invitation for talks.

Funding Cut For Bus Services In England And Wales
Funding for buses has been cut for half of local authorities in England and Wales. Since 2010, local authority funding for bus service has been slashed by 15 per cent (£44m) with more than 2000 routes being reduced or withdrawn entirely, according to research by Campaign for Better Transport.
