Man Dies In London Blaze

A man has died following a blaze at a block of flats in south-east London.

Firefighters found the man collapsed on the fourth floor of the seven floor building at 11.30pm on Tuesday.

London Fire Brigage (LFB) said that three engines and around 15 firefighters were deployed to tackle the fire at the building in Steadman Street, Walworth, Southwark.

Fire crews from Lambeth and Old Kent Road fire stations attended the incident.

The fire was brought under control by 1am on Wednesday.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the brigade.

Police are not treating the incident as suspicious.

Heroic Tyne Firemen Honoured
Two Tyne and Wear firefighters are to be recognised for their bravery at a special ceremony today. Andrew Nelson and Allan Richardson will be presented with the Chief Fire Officer's Commendations for brave and meritorious conduct after saving a man's life. The men took part in a dramatic rescue in the early hours of 4 February.

Firefighters launch four-day strike
More than 1,000 firefighters across Merseyside have begun a four-day strike in protest over planned job cuts. Another four-day stoppage is scheduled to begin two hours after the first one ends.

Appeal After Man Found In Burning Car
Police are appealing for information concerning the death of a man found in a burning car. Officers were called to reports of a car on fire at Mowlem Trading Estate, near to Leeside Road, N17, shortly after 1:00am on 17 December 2008. The London Fire Brigade were in attendance extinguishing the fire when they discovered a person inside.

Suspicious Glasgow Car Fires
Detectives in Glasgow's East End are investigating a spate of vehicle fire attacks in the city yesterday. Shortly after 3.30am police were called to a report of a vehicle fire in Ashvale Crescent, Glasgow. Upon arrival police were advised by Strathclyde Fire Service that four vehicles had been damaged by fire.

Chief Fire Officer Resigns Over Child Porn Arrest
A top fire officer for the West Midlands Fire Service has resigned after he was arrested on suspicion of making indecent images of children. West Midlands Police arrested Frank Sheehan, 55, yesterday at his home in Sutton Coldfield.
