Midwife's Diary Goes Missing
A midwife's diary containing personal information on hundreds of new and expectant mothers has been lost from a Health Trust in Greater Manchester.
Pennine Acute NHS Trust has contacted about 345 women after the community midwife, based at Rochdale Infirmary, reported the handwritten book missing.
Eileen Stringer, consultant midwife, has apologised and insisted that the loss did not compromise clinical care.
"We've written to let women know of this issue because they have a right to know that the diary went missing.
"We have assured them that this in no way compromises any of their clinical care – this is a diary, not health records.
"There is no need for anyone who has not been contacted by us to take any action whatsoever," she said.
Ms Stringer added that the use of hand-held diaries would be reviewed.
It is understood the diaries covered appointments between January and July 2008 for the midwife and contained patients' telephone numbers and addresses.
An information line has been set up for those whose details were in the diary.
A trust spokesman said the women who had contacted the helpline had been "very understanding".
More than 2,000 women give birth at the Rochdale Infirmary every year.
Pennine Acute Trust runs five hospitals in north Manchester.
