Laser Pen Blinds Pilot
A teenager has been arrested after allegedly using a 'laser pen' light to 'blind' the pilot of a passenger jet.
The plane, believed to be a KLM flight from Amsterdam, was coming in to land at about 10.30pm on Sunday when a powerful light was shone into the cockpit temporarily blinding the pilot as the aircraft was in a critical stage of descent as it came in to land at Durham Tees Valley Airport, police said.
A Cleveland Police spokeswoman said: "The incoming flight was coming in to land at Durham Tees Valley Airport when a laser device was shone into the cockpit.
"The pilot was temporarily blinded and the co-pilot landed the plane," said the police who responded by using a Cleveland Police helicopter to search an area around the airport near Darlington.
"When the police helicopter was sent to investigate, it too was targeted by the laser device.
"As a result, officers on the ground were able to arrest a 19-year-old man, who was outside the airport, and the device recovered."
The police spokesman said a 19-year-old man had been arrested and charged with two counts of endangering an aircraft.
Aviation regulators have said they are taking the offence "very seriously". Anyone found guilty of an offence of endangering an aircraft could face a prison sentence.
Last May, a police helicopter pilot who was helping chase a vehicle in the Lancashire area has been temporarily blinded with a similar 'laser' pen light.
The beam from a laser pen was shone into his eyes and he could not see and was forced to take immediate evasive action.

Man Arrested After Laser Shone At Police Helicopter
A 25-year-old man has been arrested in Birmingham on suspicion of endangering an aircraft after a laser was shone at a police helicopter. The helicopter was responding to a call at around 10.30pm on Tuesday, when someone in a car parked on Benmore Avenue, Edgbaston, shone a laser at it. Police tracked the vehicle and arrested a man from Nechells.

Investigation Launched After Laser Dazzles Pilots
Lothian and Borders Police have launched an investigation after two pilots were dazzled by a green laser while landing in Edinburgh. At around 9.30 pm on Tuesday the captain of a cargo plane which took-off from Aberdeen was landing manually in Edinburgh when a green laser was aimed at the plane causing the pilot to drop the aircraft by 400ft.
