Toddler Escapes 'Serious Injury' After Falling Into Drain
A three-year-old girl has escaped serious injury after being swept 150ft along an underground storm drain in Co Durham.
The toddler was playing with her father and family dog in a deep puddle at a playground in Riverside Park, Chester-le-Street, when the accident happened. She had been paddling in six inches of floodwater when she suddenly disappeared down an uncovered drain, along with the dog.
Detectives said the girl travelled around 50 yards (46m) underground before she was swept into the River Wear, near Durham Cricket ground yesterday evening.
Sergeant Keith Wardle said: "Fortunately, when the girl and her dog disappeared, the dad quickly realised what was happening, ran to the river bank and plucked her from the swollen river.
"She had travelled about 150ft underground through the flooded drain and the action of her and the dog through the drain seems to have unblocked it."
The girl was treated for hypothermia at the scene, and taken to the University Hospital of North Durham for overnight observation.
A police spokeswoman said, thanks to the girl's fathers quick thinking, he saved her from "almost certain death".
The dog, a boxer-mastiff cross, is still missing, police have said.

Owners To Face Longer Sentences Over Dog Attacks
Irresponsible dog owners who allow their dog to attack people or assistance dogs will face tougher prison sentences from today, Tuesday. Changes to the Dangerous Dogs Act will also mean dog owners can now face prosecution if their dog attacks a person in their home or on any private property, except if they attack a trespasser.

New proposals for England and Wales could see owners of dogs that attack and kill face a life sentence in prison. Currently, the maximum sentence is two years for those convicted of allowing a dog to be dangerously out of control. Under proposals put forward by the government, a range of new sentences would be available, from seven years to life.

The Ministry of Defence has confirmed the death of Lance Corporal Liam Tasker, The Royal Army Veterinary Corps, 1st Military Working Dog Regiment, who died in Afghanistan on Tuesday.
